Lemurs
During the autumn term, Year 5 embarks on a ‘Space Odyssey’ finding out about the Solar System. A visit is made to the local planetarium and we are visited by a space scientist for a workshop about rockets. This stimulating topic provides many opportunities for writing stories, poems and reports. At the end of the term, the children display their work and teach other children during a fun ‘Space Experience’.
In the springtime, the Year 5’s go on an ‘Island Adventure’. During this term, they learn about what it means to be British and undertake a study of the UK. In doing so they will also explore Anglo Saxon history and how it has influenced the ways Brits live today. The highlight of the term is a 5-day residential to the Isle of Wight where the children have the opportunity to visit the Yarmouth Lifeboat and take part in a variety of exciting outdoor and adventurous pursuits such as abseiling, archery and the famous giant swing!
In the summer term the pupils go on an exciting voyage of discovery to the ‘Valley of the Kings’ and learn about the Ancient Egyptians. They take part in hands on workshops where they are the archaeologists and visit Haslemere Museum to learn about mummification. This topic provides many opportunities for some beautiful art work which is displayed at the end of the term in an Egyptian Extravaganza.
Alongside all of these exciting topics, the children work on their maths skills, following the national curriculum. They experience regular mental arithmetic tasks and number investigations. Peripatetic teachers and coaches teach PE, music and Spanish. Year 5 is an exciting and jam-packed year; it begins to prepare children for the next steps in their education as well as provided a well-rounded curriculum that enables all children to succeed.
