Library News – Spring Term 2010

Writing Competition

Calling all budding authors!  We have teamed up with Children’s author, Andy Cope with a competition to get those creative brains back into action after the Christmas break and big freeze!  Andy has written 6 books all based around a spy dog called Lara and her adventures.  She also has her very own website, so if you want to find out more about them visit www.spydog451.co.uk  or look out for the library display… coming soon.

Your mission is to create your own spy pet!   Andy would like to hear what your opening paragraph would be if there was a book about your ‘spy pet’.  Your paragraph shouldn’t be more than 1 side of A4 paper.  Please use the sheet attached.  Pandas and Polar Bears wishing to enter may decide to draw and label a picture of their pet instead.  Everyone who enters will have their work read by Andy and he will choose 2 winners (1 from those aged 4-7, and 1 from those aged 8-11).

Please send your entries in to reception by MONDAY 25TH January.  I will then send them on to Andy who will hopefully be able to announce the winners in Book Week.

Get Reading

Read a good book lately?  If so, why don’t you come to the library and fill in a Book Review Form so that you can recommend it to others.   If you find it tricky choosing a book and you’re aged between 7 and 10 you may also like to read one of the 6 shortlisted books in the Surrey Libraries’ Children’s Book Award;  they’re all recommended good reads (see the poster in the library and overleaf for more details).  To get a copy of one of the books call in to Haslemere library in Wey Hill.  Why not read all 6 and vote for your favourite online at www.surreycc.gov.uk/libraries !!

Use Your School Library

Don’t forget as well as your class bookcases, the library has a huge selection of fiction and non-fiction books.  I am in the library on Tuesday afternoon if you would like some help and on a Thursday between 1.00pm-1.30pm, the year 5 librarians will be there if you need assistance.  This term you will find Oscar Brown and Jemimah Wylie in this role.

If there isn’t time in the school day to choose a book, why not pop in with your Mum or Dad after school on a Monday between 3.30-4.00pm when you can spend more time browsing?  I will have your library card there for you if you don’t look after your own. Don’t forget, if you can’t find a book you are looking for, add it to the suggestion book and we will see what we can do!

Happy Reading and Writing!

Mrs Brownbill, School Librarian

PS BOOK WEEK runs from February 8th-12th……look out for the Book fair and get planning your Character day outfit. Which book character are you going to come dressed as?

Got a good idea for Book week…let me know/add it to the suggestion box??
