Minutes of latest Eco meeting

Camelsdale has now achieved the
Eco-schools Silver Award

Our Silver Award Certificate

Camelsdale First School
Parent/Carers Eco Code

As we are always trying to be more eco friendly, we hope you would like to try to be too.
Here are some ideas which our parents have suggested you can try:

WASTE EFFICIENCY

v     Work towards recycling as much as possible e.g. Have 2 bins in the house – 1 for household waste and 1 for recyclables

v     Receive school letters via e-mail

v Use a composter in the garden

DID YOU KNOW??
Recycling just one aluminium can could save enough energy to run a TV for 3
Hours – that’s 3 episodes of lost, 6 episodes of Simpsons or 6 reruns of Friends !

v     Re-use paper, envelopes, ribbon, bags etc – wear them out before you throw them out!

v     Think about your food miles and buy seasonal produce grown locally

FOOD 4 THOUGHT – Next time you crunch on a bean from Kenya or a strawberry from California, think about the aircraft carrying the food.  In the 1st two minutes of its journey it has used the same amount of fuel as 21,532 cars driving one mile!

v Buy loose fruit and veg rather than pre-packed

v     Stop junk mail – contact the Mailing Preference Service on 0207 291 3310 or visit www.mpsonline.org.uk and remove your name from mailing lists.

20% of household waste is paper, 2.5 million tonnes ends up in landfill!!!

 ENERGY EFFICIENCY

v     Switch off lights – especially if sunny

v     Use energy efficient light bulbs

v     Turn your thermostat down by 1’C

-         put on a jumper

-         get a cuddle!

v     Do FULL loads in your washing machine and dishwasher (you’ll save water too!)

v     Leave the car at home and walk OR get a friend to share journeys

v     Check tyre pressure – it can save £s on fuel consumption

v Don’t leave TVs. Videos etc on standby

Standby lights on electrical goods use an av. 10% of the total electricity used each year!
You could save £40 a
year turning those lights off!

v Close doors and windows when the heating is on - use draught excluders - pull curtains

v Don’t fill the kettle up if you don’t need to- it wastes water

- uses extra electricity to heat all the water up

- and if we all did it , we would apparently save enough electricity to run all the country’s street lighting

AN AVERAGE FAMILY PRODUCES APPROX. 25 TONS OF CARBON EACH YEAR!

LITTER

v     Never litter

- If you can’t find a bin why not take it home and recycle it

v     When you walk the dog, always take a bag to pick up any mess

v     Have a bag in the car for any rubbish – don’t use the window

v     Dispose of chewing gum properly

v     If you see rubbish on the street phone your local council and they’re obliged to come and clean it up

- Find the number on www.tagish.co.uk/links/

      - The streets look nicer and you get something back for your council tax!

In the U.K. we spend £150 million each year on cleaning chewing gum off the streets.
What would we do with that money?... Build 3 hospitals…Employ 8,500 teachers!!

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

v     Try to walk more and drive less

v     Try cooking from scratch more and get the family involved in the preparation of food

- It’s fun

- Gets everyone talking

- Gives children responsibility and greater interest in good food

v     Always try to have breakfast – it gets your brain going

v     Enjoy our beautiful countryside via bikes, feet, rollerblades

v     Try and buy locally grown produce or have a go at growing your own

v     Shop locally

-         You can walk

-         Use less fuel

-         Supports local businesses

v     Drink plenty of water

v     Eat plenty of fruit and veggies

v     SMILE! J

- It takes half as many muscles to smile as it does to frown

- It will give you less wrinkles, makes you and others feel good and everyone will

wonder what you have been up to!

Exercise releases chemicals that make you feel happy.  We know chocolate does too, but it’s not as good for you! J

 WATER EFFICIENCY

v     Turn the tap off when brushing teeth and rinse using water in a cup

v     Get a water butt for watering the garden

- Rain water can also make your hair shiny!

v     Try and have showers instead of baths

v     Report leaks to the waterboard

v     Flush less

v     Use a hippo bag in your toilet (available from your water authority)

v     Use a bowl in the sink to wash up – it uses less water…then why not water your plants with it

“BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD”  Mahatma Gandhi

 GARDENS AND GROUNDS

v     Use a compost bin to recycle food waste

v     Try a wormery to recycle food and create your own fertilizer and compost

v     Encourage your children to grow some flowers and or veggies

            -Its fun, relaxing and rewarding

v     Encourage wildlife into your garden with a:

      -ladybird house

            -hedgehog house

            -bird boxes/tables

-a ‘wild patch’ for bugs and butterflies

v     Use eco friendly and bird friendly compost, sprays and pellets

 TRANSPORT

v     Consider a holiday in the U.K. and save on air miles!

v     Try and leave the car at home occasionally and walk or take public transport

v     Car share when possible

v     When driving, accelerate slowly and brake with plenty of distance to conserve fuel and reduce emissions

v     Remember your tyre pressure – squiggy tyres use more fuel

v     Remove roof boxes when not in use

A double-decker bus carries the same number of   people as 40 cars.  Make less ‘GAS’ and get a bus pass!

Camelsdale First School
Eco-School Meeting
Meeting held 14th January 2009 at 3.45

*WELCOME TO our newly formed AFTER SCHOOL ECO CLUB MEMBERS! (It is great to now see an extra curricular Eco Club started up! Well done Mrs Robinson and Mrs Smith – Wednesday 3.30-4.30pm.)

1.      ECO SCHOOLS ACTION PLAN REVIEW

The committee reviewed each section of the Plan and noted any developments. These included: - Review with other staff the current arrangements for Eco warriors.

RECYCLING DOORWAY.

  • Recycled Paper has now been purchased for class use and each teacher has been issued with some. We shall need to continue to monitor cost/usage.
  • A booklet “top Tips for Sustainable Purchasing in Schools” had been obtained form the DCSF. Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Venton to read to see if there are any good ideas/tips regarding procurement.
  • The PTA had purchased a few plastic sectioned lunch boxes. Mrs Palmer agreed to ask the PTA at their next meeting regarding their success. Do we need more?
  • The Wormeries have been re-launched. Well done!

“Generation Green” has been launched across the whole school community via fliers, school newsletter, and banner outside school. A target of 21,000 leaves has been set for our school by “Generation Green”. So far we have 2000 leaves. We can earn leaves through Eco Club activities, teachers using the Eco lesson plans, parents registering their Eco work. Mrs Robinson will promote again in the next Eco Assembly (19.1.09). There is also a promotional display in the entrance hall – thank you Mrs Dean!

ENERGY AND WATER DOORWAY

  • Staff have now been reminded to turn off their computers, monitors, IWBs etc when they are not in use and particularly at the end of the day. Staff still need to be reminded to turn them off at the plug too!
  • Mr Lockwood, (our newly appointed Premises Manager) has now resumed helping pupils to collect data on our electrical/gas usage. This data needs now to be analysed/graphed. Mrs Robinson to liaise with Mr Lockwood. We cannot currently track our water usage easily with the children as the meter is under a manhole cover in the pavement outside school! The boys urinal however does now have a regulator on it. Mr Lockwood needs to look at whether or not it can be adjusted etc for weekends/holidays?? Heating is on a timer/thermostat controlled. Mrs Palmer reported that it is not intended to put solar panels into the school roof – the refurbishment project will see the roof patched and new windows replacing the old ones! This should certainly help with regard to retaining heat!

SCHOOL COUNCIL DOORWAY

  •  “Wild School” lessons continue to gather pace with another Junior class now enjoying learning even more in the school grounds. Thank you Mrs Carter!
  • Badgers now appear to be visiting the Secret Garden – WOW!

FOOD AND DRINK DOORWAY

  • Our Soup Kitchen Project started in October under the guidance of Mrs O’Sullivan with classes making soup and enjoying at lunchtime accompanying their packed lunch. The recipe even goes home too. This is proving to be a popular project and the challenge is now to see if this can be built upon. Rice/Pasta salad in the summer? Link to Lower Roundhurst Farm for the growing of the vegetables? Grow more vegetables in the Courtyard Garden? Refer to the Development Committee who meets on 21.1.09. Mrs Palmer agreed also to talk with the PTA regarding their PTA Shop and Home Produce.

TRAVEL AND TRAFFIC DOORWAY

  • Mrs Palmer reported that the Car Share Scheme had been launched this term with four families initially organised. Mrs Sarah Porter - School Travel Plan Coordinator – had visited the school on January 9th to help launch and publicise the Scheme.
  • The committee decided to launch The Golden Boot Award Challenge after half term – thus promoting those who walk to school. Mrs Young will oversee this with data collected on those who walk to school and the winning class being awarded the Golden Boot trophy!
  • The committee reviewed The School Travel Plan Parent Pledge leaflet – which has been updated to include the latest developments e.g. School Crossing Patrol, Car Share Scheme. It was decided that the Eco Club would re-issue the pledge to parents (see pledge attached to these minutes).
  • Mrs Palmer reported that it is very good news since the committee last met, that the School safety Zone is to go ahead in the Village. Great news!

2.      HASLEMERE AS A TRANSITION TOWN

Mrs Smith informed the committee that she is now a member of the Haslemere Transition Town Project which should see good links being made between the school’s eco work and that of Haslemere itself. Leaflets and posters are to be displayed to help promote the new scheme. Thank you Mrs Smith.

3.      Date of next meeting:  Wednesday 29th APRIL 2009 at 3.45pm in the library.
